For the first time in Germany, a selection of Pierre Hermé, the famous French pastry chef, creations are now available exclusively at the Excelsior Hotel Ernst for Afternoon Tea:

Taste Pierre Hermé’s world famous macarons, a pleasure to eyes and palate which you will never forget!
The harmonic ambience and the stylish design of the hotel lobby and wintergarden accompany the Afternoon Tea at the Excelsior Hotel Ernst. Enjoy a pot of tea from the large tea selection. The charming team of the Piano Bar around Tea Master Gold Andrea Helbig will be pleased to advice you concerning the choice of your favorite tea. In addition, a selection of sweet and savoury Afternoon Tea Classics, which accomplish the classic tea ceremony, is served: Scones with clotted cream and marmelade, small sandwiches with smoked salmon, cucumber, cream cheese or ham, English crumpets and small brownies.


The Afternoon Tea inspired by Pierre Hermé is served daily from 3pm to 6pm. Please reserve a table in advance.

Prelude Dinner

The Excelsior Hotel Ernst and the Cologne Philharmonic Hall, as social venues in Cologne, are affiliated with each other for many years. They pursue the common goal to offer unforgettable memories to their guests. Expand the musical enjoyment of your concert visit with a culinary note during the new Präludium Dinner at the Excelsior Hotel Ernst. Four thematically matched components (starter, soup, main course and dessert) will be served in a box at the same time before the concert in order to get you in the right mood. You have plenty of time to enjoy these delicacies in anticipation of the concert while sitting in the exclusive atmosphere of the hotels wintergarden or on the lobby lounge.
If you enjoy the Präludium Dinner with us you will also receive the program of the evening complementary on presentation of the concert ticket at the foyer of the Cologne Philharmonic Hall. You will find an electronic version of the program by 10 pm at koelner-philharmonie.de.

The Piano Brunch is a gourmet event. Every Sunday, you travel around the culinary world of the Excelsior Hotel Ernst accompanied by live piano music.

Matcha tea ceremony 抹茶

Another innovation at the taku that Mirko Gaul has introduced after his culinary journey through Asia:

Our new Matcha tea ceremony is now available at taku. Directly prepared at your table! Matcha (jap.: „pulverised tea) consists of finest powder of crushed green tea which is used during the Japanese tea ceremony.  This sort of tea has an intense green colour and a mellow sweet flavor.

To produce round about 300 gramm of Matcha powder, the traditional granit mills need an hour. The way of preparatin of Matcha was probably developed in the 6th century in China. As used in the traditional East Asian medicine, the tea leaves are dried as medical plants and are milled afterwards.
This type of medicine was traditonally produced in Buddhist abbeys and mainly consumed there. Based on this tradition, the first tea ritual of the cen and chan Buddhists emerged. 

The taste of genuine matcha is called umami which symbolized the fifth sense of sense.

Revive your senses and enjoy the bright colors of the spring under the open sky. Get a break from everyday and enjoy the first warm rays of the sun at the beautiful Mediterranean courtyards.
The terrace of the Hanse Stube is an oasis of silence in the city, widely known and charms our guests with it´s picturesque-mediterranean ambience.

To the opening of the terrace season Julian Tröger, Head Sommelier of the Excelsior Hotel Ernst, and a representative of the vineyard Korrell will present the new summer wines.
In collaboration with this superb wine estate we produce an 'Excelsior Hotel Ernst Samples' exclusively for our house. Enjoy three light courses by tobias Koch, chef executiv of the Hanse Stube, accompanied by wines of the vineyard Korrell on our inner courtyard terrace.
